Dr. Mak Tak

Hello! This blog entry was primarily done by Tony in 2011 and was finished by Jenny and Gabriel. Today we will be introducing to a brilliant Asian-Canadian Doctor: Dr. Tak Wah Mak.

Dr. Tak Mak was born in southern China on October 4, 1946. He is now 65 years old. Dr. Mak Tak is well known for his work in immunology (the study of the immune system), he has also done work in biochemistry and cancer genetics! This particular Doctor made a huge contributions to Canada and medical history.

Dr. Mak Tak works with genetically modified mice to better understand the causes of cancer.

He also determined the gene inside the body which creates T Cells and by doing so he made an enormous medical breakthrough about the immune system. He was a step closer to stopping cancer. That lead him to the second part of his research: cell-apoptosis ( the death of cells). Cancer is basically cell-apoptosis gone wrong, since the cancer cells can't die they grow. Now, because of the research of Dr. Mak Tak a lot of people are safe from cancer. 50 years ago 25% of Women diagnosed with breast cancer lived for only 5 years. Today 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer live more than 5 years and some are cured. Wow isn't he amazing?

Here is a quote made by Dr. Mak Tak : "Instead of trying to save a person drowning in the river, who is throwing them into to the river upstream? Can we prevent that from happening?" That makes a lot of sense doesn't it?

The video where I found this quote can be found below. It is entitled: CP24 Shares... Dr. Tak Mak's Story.

Here is a quote made by someone about Dr Mak Tak:"Dr. Tak Wah Mak brilliant career as a leading world-renowned Canadian scientist has had a major impact on public health around the world."
I got this quote from a description box of a Youtube video. I have the video below, but here is the link to the website so you can read the description box.
VIDEOS
In this is a video of Dr. Mak Tak talks about breast cancer and the different result of a person diagnosed with breast cancer 50 years and today.

This is a pretty short video but I believe you will find it very meaningful. In short, he is explaining his philosophy about how best to deal with Cancer.
P.S. This is where I got the quotes made by Dr. Mak Tak.

This is a biography of Dr Mak Tak. It also talk about successes and there are a couple of Doctors talk about and complements him and his work.

Alfred Sung

Hi! My name is Natasha and I am a grade 6 student at Sir Samuel B. Steele Jr. P.S. in Toronto. In my post I will be talking about the great Canadian designer, Alfred Sung.

Alfred Sung was born on June 14, 1948 in Shanghai, China. Mr.Sung is well known for his beautiful clothing designs that he makes himself. His greatest contribution, in my opinion is that he has made the Canadian fashion industry more popular, in Canada and around the world, by making trendy and high fashion clothing for both men and women.

Here is a quote made by Alfred Sung "I was young and very immature, and very shy back when I was 17."
(source of quote: ) http://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=n6Stmakbqws

Here is a quote made by an interviewer about Mr.Sung "I think that Mr.Sung is a very talented and interesting designer."
(source of quote: ) http://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=n6Stmakbqws

Mr.Sung wanted to become a fine artist. His parents' wishes were that he should pursue a more traditional profession. In time, his father compromised and agreed to send him to Paris where he studied couture at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. After graduating with first-place honours, Mr. Sung moved to New York City to study at the Parsons School of Design. Upon completion, he began the task of getting better at his talent while working as an assistant designer for a Seventh Avenue dress manufacturer. In 1972, Mr.Sung moved to Canada (Toronto). His next step was designing for a sportswear manufacturer in Toronto's garment district. After using his fashion illustration skills to make extra money for his income, he opened a tiny shop called "Moon" in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood.

These video's are about Alfred Sung's opinion of fashion and about his fashion.

It was very perplexing for me to find so little information online about such a famous designer. In my opinion, there should be more acknowledgement about Mr. Sung's talent on the Internet. I am especially disappointed that there is not an appreciation website about him anywhere on the Web. In my own way, I hope that this blog entry helps a bit in exposing the world a bit more to the contributions of Alfred Sung.

Norman Kwong

Picture of Norman Kwong in his Edmonton Eskimos uniform.

Hi! My name is Christian. I am a grade 6 student. Today I will be talking about Norman Kwong. He was born on October 24, 1929 in Calgary Alberta. He is well known because he is the first person of Chinese ancestry to be a lieutenant-governor of Alberta, play for the Calgary Stampeders from 1948 to 1950 and the Edmonton Eskimos from 1951 until he retired in 1960. His nickname was the "China Clipper", Kwong was the first Chinese Canadian to play on a professional Canadian football team. A powerful fullback, in 11 years Kwong ran for 9,022 yards for an average of 5.2 yards per carry and scored 93 touchdowns. He is the winner of the Grey Cup four times in his career ( in 1948, 1954, 1955, and 1956). Kwong was a Western Conference all-star running back and won the Eddie James Memorial trophy, in 1951, 1955 and 1956. He was awarded the Schenley Most Outstanding Canadian in 1955 and 1956. He was named Canadian Athlete of the Year in 1955. He was drafted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1969, Canada's sports hall of fame in 1975, the Edmonton Eskimos' Wall of Honour in 1983 (where his jersey #95 was retired), and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. In November 2006, he was one of very few of his contemporaries to be voted one of the Canadian Football League's Top 50 players of the sport's modern era by he Canadian Sports network TSN. He was  the president and general manager for the Calgary Stampeders from the years 1988 to 1991. He lead the team to a loss in the Grey Cup final in 1991. Between 1980 and 1994, Kwong was a co-owner of the Calgary Flames, having been one of the original six Calgary businessmen who bought the NHL’s Atlanta Flames hockey team. Then they moved it o Calgary1980. The Calgary Flames won the Stanley Cup in 1989, which makes him one of  the few people who  has their name  on both the Grey Cup and the Stanley Cup.

His contributions to Canada and Canadian culture are many and very interesting to share. Norman's public abilty from sports helped him transition himself on to politics and government. In 1971 he ran for the Alberta Progressive Conservative party in the riding of Calgary-Millican. In this election, the PCs ended Social Credit's 36-year hold on power. They won all but five seats in Calgary. However, Kwong himself was beaten by long-time holder of office Arthur J. Dixon who won by a 1600 vote lead. In 1988 Kwong was made a member of the Order of Canada and  served as  national chairman for the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism. Kwong was chosen to be Lieutenant-Governor General of Alberta on January 20, 2005. Kwong welcomed Queen Elizabeth II to Alberta in June 2005 on a visit commemorating Alberta's first 100 years in Canadian Confederation. During a private assembly with the Queen Norman was presented with the emblem of a Knight of Justice in the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. His term concluded on May 11, 2010, and he was succeeded by Don Ethell.

"I was proud to be chosen as Alberta's first lieutenant Governor of Chinese heritage and deeply honoured by such a rare honour to serve the province and country that I love." said Norman Kwong at the unveiling of the portrait of Alberta's 16th Lieutenant Governor.

Phan Thi Kim Phuc

Hello. Our names are Razan and Aminah. Thank you for reading our blog entry about a truly remarkable Canadian, Kim Phuc.

Kim Phuc was born in 1963 in Vietnam, Kim Phuc and her family were residents of Trang Bang, a village in South Vietnam. On June 8th, 1972, a bomb was dropped by South Vietnamese planes in Trang Bang. Originally, she became famous for a photo of her running naked after a napalm bomb that burned her clothes.  The photo was taken on the day where they dropped the bomb on the village. It was partly responsible for showing to the world the horror that the Vietnam War brought to the lives of millions of children. Alot of people say that the picture of Kim Phuc was one of the haunting pictures of the Vietnam War. It is probably true that her suffering, as well as the sharing of this series of photos, helped shorten the Vietnam War. This, then, saved the lives of many civilians - both adults and children!

The photo thats included in the link above was taken by a photographer, Nick Ut.

In 1997, she established the first Kim Phuc Foundation, in the US, with the aim of providing medical and psychological assistance to child victims of war.
