Alfred Sung

Hi! My name is Natasha and I am a grade 6 student at Sir Samuel B. Steele Jr. P.S. in Toronto. In my post I will be talking about the great Canadian designer, Alfred Sung.

Alfred Sung was born on June 14, 1948 in Shanghai, China. Mr.Sung is well known for his beautiful clothing designs that he makes himself. His greatest contribution, in my opinion is that he has made the Canadian fashion industry more popular, in Canada and around the world, by making trendy and high fashion clothing for both men and women.

Here is a quote made by Alfred Sung "I was young and very immature, and very shy back when I was 17."

Here is a quote made by an interviewer about Mr.Sung "I think that Mr.Sung is a very talented and interesting designer."

Mr.Sung wanted to become a fine artist. His parents' wishes were that he should pursue a more traditional profession. In time, his father compromised and agreed to send him to Paris where he studied couture at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. After graduating with first-place honours, Mr. Sung moved to New York City to study at the Parsons School of Design. Upon completion, he began the task of getting better at his talent while working as an assistant designer for a Seventh Avenue dress manufacturer. In 1972, Mr.Sung moved to Canada (Toronto). His next step was designing for a sportswear manufacturer in Toronto's garment district. After using his fashion illustration skills to make extra money for his income, he opened a tiny shop called "Moon" in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood.

It was very perplexing for me to find so little information online about such a famous designer. In my opinion, there should be more acknowledgement about Mr. Sung's talent on the Internet. I am especially disappointed that there is not an appreciation website about him anywhere on the Web. In my own way, I hope that this blog entry helps a bit in exposing the world a bit more to the contributions of Alfred Sung.
